WELL DRILLING AND DEEP BORING
ATVV AKA Ltd. has implemented several hundred water supply projects throughout Latvia, successfully cooperating with municipalities, large and small companies and organisations, as well as individual customers and individual households.
The qualifications and experience of the company’s specialists, as well as the equipment at their disposal, can provide anyone with something they need every day – quality drinking water.
Before starting the borehole installation works, ATVV AKA specialists will provide consultations on the possibilities of underground water use in any location in Latvia – the required borehole depth, the expected water quality, offer solutions for borehole design options, as well as, if necessary, acquaint the client with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia related to underground water use issues.
ATVV AKA Ltd. provides a full package of services – develops a borehole project, coordinates the necessary documentation with state institutions, and upon completion of drilling works, issues a borehole passport approved by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Agency to the client.
ATVV AKA Ltd. has three drilling rigs URB 51, as well as drilling rigs URB 2.5A, and BA 15. With the help of such equipment, it is possible to drill boreholes with a depth of a few tens of metres, as well as boreholes with a depth of up to 1000 metres.
Depending on the customer’s requirements and the needs for which the underground water will be used, stainless steel, black steel or polyethylene casing pipes can be used in the borehole equipment.
After the borehole is installed, the hydrogeological parameters of the borehole are determined – static and dynamic levels, as well as the recommended operational dose.
ATVV AKA Ltd. guarantees its work for two years.
Pump and water pipe installation
During the construction process, it is inevitable to think about a safe and high-quality home water supply system that brings water from the drilled well to the house.
The components of a water supply system that are commonly used are:
1. Borehole pump (brings water into the house)
2. Adapter (bronze construction, easy to assemble, leak-proof against groundwater)
3. Hydrophore (pressure boiler) – ensures normal pressure in the system
4. Pump control panel
5. Water absorption pipe – PVC or other material
6. Pump safety cable
7. Electrical cable with hermetic connection
8. Borehole cover (to ensure the borehole is airtight)
9. Pump automation (pressure switch, frequency converter) – switches the pump on, off
Other installation options are also possible, depending on the customer’s wishes and circumstances.
Boreholes for geothermal heating
A geothermal heating system is a way to heat/cool buildings and provide hot water using the earth’s heat.
This system is rightly considered one of the green energy types of extraction. When a geothermal heating system is built, a series of boreholes is drilled into the ground, with a closed loop of pipes installed in them, in which the heat transfer fluid circulates.
The number and depth of boreholes depends on engineering calculations and the geological situation at the borehole site. The required spacing between boreholes is 5-10 m.
ATVV AKA Ltd:
- drilling work for a vertical collector;
- installing a pipe loop in boreholes;
- tamponading of boreholes to exclude possible surface water seepage into groundwater aquifers, and to exclude water overflow between different aquifers.
- automatic pressure control mechanisms in boreholes and monitoring for possible leaks of heat transfer fluid;
- construction of the well completion section;
- cleaning up the area.
Well liquidation
To protect groundwater, boreholes that are no longer used for water supply must be disposed of (abandoned). The disposal of boreholes shall be carried out in accordance with the rules and requirements laid down by the national authorities. Only licensed companies and specialists are authorised to carry out tamponade.
Well abandonment is required in the following cases:
1. The borehole is no longer used:
- the borehole is located in an area where economic activity is no longer taking place,
- A new borehole is being installed to provide water supply,
- an alternative solution (e.g. centralised water supply) has been found for water supply
2. the well is in an emergency condition, its repair is impossible or unprofitable;
3. the well has reached the end of its service life, its technical condition is inadequate for further operation (e.g. corroded well casings);
4. The quality of water from the borehole does not meet the minimum safety and quality requirements for drinking water set by the Cabinet of Ministers; it is not possible or cost-effective to improve the quality of water by means of filters.
Upon completion of the well abandonment works, a well tamponage certificate is drawn up, one copy of which is given to the well owner and one to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Agency.
